'Cold Shrink' Hi-K Termination
Kits
(for 11 KV, 22 KV and 33 KV.) |

| Product Description |
|
3M 'Cold Shrink'
terminations for 3 core cables are Class 1 terminations providing stress control, tracking
resistance and sealing from external environment. They meet the requirements of IEEE
standard 48 Class 1 and the VDE 0278 part 4 standard.
They consist of an EPDM trifurcation break out (sheath seal) and a track resistant
EPDM insulator prestretched onto a removable cold shrink core. In addition to this, the
indoor (weather protected)terminations have a |
High-K (high
dielectric constant) stress control tube. The outdoor terminations have a silicon
insulator with built-in skirts and a High-K stress control tube.
For paper insulated cables, the stress control is achieved by a high performance
yape and the sheath seal is reinforced with a resin. This multipurpose resin
supplied in a unique 'Unipak' packing helps prevent leakage of water and oil as well as
provides insulation and mechanical support. |

| Stress Control |
|
The 3M 'Cold Shrink' Termination controls the
voltage distribution of the electrical field by use of a special high dielectric constant
material. The High-K material has a dielectric constant (K) of approximately 30, which
capacitively distributes the field that surrounds the termination.
Electrical flux is regulated to equalize the electrical stresses in a controlled
manner along the entire termination area extending beyond the cable's shield cut-off. By
controlling the electrical field, the |
stress concentrations within the installed
termination, and on the termination's insulator/air interface, are kept below 10 volts per
mil at rated voltage. Within a 15 kV cable, for example, the stress concentrations in a
continuous length of shielded cable are typically 50 volts per mil adjacent to the shield
to about 70 volts per mil at the conductor. The 'Cold Shrink' termination reduces the
cable's stresses at the termination to less than those in the continuous shielded portion
of the cable. |

| Termination Features |
|
 |
Class I
termination provides stress relief, track resistance & environmental seal.
|
 |
Versatile
system allows quick and easy installation and accommodates a wide range of cable sizes.
|
 |
Cold Shrink
design; simply place termination over prepared cable and unwind core to shrink into place.
No heating or force-fit required.
|
 |
High dielectric
constant stress control; specially formulated high-impulse material minimizes surface
stress by uniformly redistributing the electrical field over the entire surface of the
insulator. This eliminates the space, time and skill required for making a stress cone.
|
|
 |
Special Track
resistant EPDM rubber insulator, attained through use of high technology, provides a
reliable creepage path for withstanding high humidity indoor environments.
|
 |
Silicon rubber
insulators in outdoor terminations provide the track resistance reliability of porcelain
without the cumbersome weight & fragility.
|
 |
Water skirts of
unequal diameters are an integral part of the outdoor insulator. Built-in skirts reduce
installation time and scope of human error. The unequal diameters increase creepage
distance and thus further reduce tracking.

|
| Maintenance |
|
The components of the 3M 'Cold Shrink' Terminations
are not impaired by freezing or heating due to ambient temperatures found in storage or
shipping. Normal storage and stock rotation are recommended.
The sealability can be measured by removing the supporting PST 'Cold |
Shrink' core and measuring the inside diameter after a
period of thirty minutes. Multiply this diameter by 1.1 to determine the minimum cable
insulation diameter; this unit will fit on any cable larger than this, upto the maximum
size specified for the kit. |
